Vol. 414 No. 2

Written Answers. - Family Farm Incomes.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

42 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the proportion of family farm income which is currently provided by Irish or EC taxpayers.

According to CSO data, the proportion of family farm income, i.e. income arising from self-employment and other trading income, arising from premia and headage payments made directly to farmers, ranged from 8 per cent to 15 per cent over the past five years. Of the total paid under this heading in 1990, 16 per cent came from the Irish Exchequer and 84 per cent from Community funds.

The EC market support system, which is almost entirely financed from Community funds, also makes a major contribution to family farm income but because that contribution is indirect it is not possible to quantify the percentage of family farm income which it represents.
