Vol. 414 No. 2

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

Pádraic McCormack

Ceist:

54 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Education if he has received applications for the appointment of remedial teachers to serve the North Connemara area of County Galway from Roundstone to Cashel and Letterfrack which is an area in radius of 15 or 20 miles from Clifden; as the appointment of one or two remedial teachers for this area is absolutely essential; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I presume the Deputy is referring to 11 schools in the north Connemara area. I have received requests for remedial teachers from the schools in question.

As the Deputy will be aware, 80 additional remedial posts serving over 240 schools were allocated this year under arrangements under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress.

These appointments were made following the collection of data and information by my Department's primary inspectorate from schools. The posts were then allocated on the basis of priority of need, as indicated by the information collected by the inspectorate.

The needs of other schools, including the school mentioned by the Deputy, will be kept under review.
