Vol. 414 No. 4

B & I Line Bill, 1991: Order for Second Stage.

Bill entitled an Act to enable the Minister for Finance to purchase additional shares of the B & I Line public limited company, to discharge the liability of that company in respect of certain of its borrowings and to indemnify it against certain other liabilities and to provide for connected matters.

That issue is not agreed by The Workers' Party. We signalled earlier in the day that we do not think it is appropriate that this Bill be taken without the full implications of the sale of B & I to the proposed purchaser, ICG, being fully understood. There is far more urgent legislation to be taken, such as that dealing with matrimonial homes and spouses' rights, and it would be more appropriate for the Government to rush that legislation through. This very important legislation dealing with B & I has not been given full consideration. The public at large, and indeed the Members of this House, have not had the opportunity to understand its implications. For those reasons we oppose the Order for Second Stage.

Question put: "That Second Stage be taken now."
