Vol. 414 No. 4

Written Answers. - Fishing Industry Development.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

49 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Marine if he has satisfied himself that current or envisaged fish quotas cater sufficiently for the development of the fishing industry in this country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not satisfied that Ireland's share of fish stocks is adequate to ensure the reasonable continued development in the longer term of the fishing industry in Ireland having regard to the volume of stocks located in waters contiguous to Ireland. One of my key objectives in the context of the review of the Common Fisheries Policy is to lessen these constraints on the development of the Irish fishing industry.
