Vol. 414 No. 5

Written Answers. - Hip Replacement Operation Cost.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

99 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Health if she will outline the estimated average cost, including hospital fees and specialists' fees, of each hip replacement operation performed in public hospitals in the State.

There are nine public elective orthopaedic centres in the country and each of these carries out a wide variety of elective procedures including hip replacements.

The cost of a hip replacement operation reflects a number of variable factors such as the age of the patient, the complexity of the patient's medical condition, the length of stay, and the occupancy rate in the unit. Taking account of these factors and having regard to all pay costs, including consultants' remuneration, the cost of this procedure is normally in the range of £3,300 to £4,000.
