Vol. 414 No. 9

Written Answers. - Co-Operatives' Tax Exemptions.

Tomás MacGiolla

Ceist:

53 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the estimated cost to the Exchequer of the tax exemptions for co-operatives for each of the years 1990, 1989, 1988.

Statistics are not recorded in such a manner as would enable the precise information requested by the Deputy to be provided.

However, on the assumption that the bulk of exempt co-operative society profits would become liable to tax at the special reduced corporation tax rate of 10 per cent if the exemption were removed, it is tentatively estimated that the current annual cost of the exemption could be of the order of £6 to £10 million.
