300 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline (1) when MOT testing for cars will be introduced in this country (2) the plans, if any, he has for such testing in areas outside Dublin (3) the level of staff to be appointed and (4) when this will take place.
In accordance with EC Council Directive 91/328/EEC, Ireland must introduce compulsory testing of an estimated 540,000 private cars over four years old by 1 January 1998 with a repeat test every two years. I intend to publish a discussion document later this year setting out a possible time table and implementation options.
