Vol. 415 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Meath Taxi Rank Facilities.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

302 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment if he will sanction the provision of a taxi rank in Navan, County Meath; if the study on the introduction of public hire vehicles service for this area has been completed; and if so, when the results of the study will be known.

Appointed stands (taxi ranks) can only be provided in an area which has been declared to be a taximeter area where licensed taxis may operate. Navan is not a taximeter area. However, a review of the procedures governing the licensing and operation of small public service vehicles generally is being carried out and the question of applying taximeter area status to towns where taxis do not operate at present, including Navan, is among the issues being considered. I expect a final report from the review group to be submitted to me by early March.
