Vol. 415 No. 1

Written Answers. - Westmeath Disposal of Meat.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

392 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Health if she will outline the steps if any, which she has taken to ensure that the health of residents in the Clonebeigue area of County Westmeath is not put at risk by the dumping of meat from a plant (details supplied) in County Westmeath.

The site for the disposal of debris containing meat in County Westmeath from the plant referred to was visited by officers of the Midland Health Board who inspected the disposal operation and ensured that good hygiene practices were in place. They were satisfied that there was no interference from ground animals, attraction of vermin or nuisances arising from smells and so on. It is reported that this continues to be the situation.

In the longer term the Midland Health Board have undertaken a water sampling programme, to assess the quality of water in the disposal site area. Tests reported to date have shown no negative outcomes. Water samples from a number of local wells and streams will continue to be tested on an ongoing basis for as long as is necessary to ensure there is no risk to public health.

I have kept in contact and have had discussions with the Midland Health Board, Westmeath County Council, the Department of the Environment and other interested local parties regarding the matter.
