Vol. 415 No. 1

Written Answers. - Foynes (Limerick) School.

Michael Noonan

Ceist:

412 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been drawn to the plans of the Mercy nuns to withdraw from a school (details supplied) in County Limerick; if he will outline the arrangements being made by his Department to ensure that the school remains open as a viable post-primary school; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that the Mercy Order, who manage the school in question, have made known their intention of withdrawing from management at the end of the academic year 1995.

This school shares a catchment area with three other post-primary schools located in three separate centres. Accordingly, the possibilities for rationalisation of post-primary facilities are currently being examined by my Department.

A proposal has been submitted to my Department aimed at ensuring the continuance of the school in question beyond 1995 and this is under consideration in the context of the overall long term needs of the centre and catchment area. I am not, therefore, in a position at present to give a final decision on the matter.
