Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

415 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education the up-to-date position regarding essential repairs to St. Stephen's De la Salle primary school, 25 Patrick Street, Waterford.

My Department are currently awaiting a report from their technical advisers regarding works requested by the authorities of St. Stephen's De la Salle national school, Waterford. When this report is to hand the question of a grant approval in respect of necessary works will be considered in the context of the available capital and a decision conveyed to the school authorities.

Ceist:

416 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education the current position regarding the request from St. Stephen's De la Salle primary school, 25 Patrick Street, Waterford for an additional assistant teacher, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The staffing of a national school is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous school year. The enrolment in St. Stephen's on 30 September 1990 was 447 which warrants a staffing of principal and 13 assistants for the current school year. This is in accordance with the agreement between the Government and the INTO. The only departure from this agreement is in the case of maximum class size guidelines being breached. St. Stephen's is not in breach of the maximum class size guidelines.
