Vol. 415 No. 1

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grant Requirements.

Michael Noonan

Ceist:

423 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Education if he will accept the results of a student (details supplied) in County Galway achieved at the regional technical college, Letterkenny, County Donegal, as the equivalent of the leaving certificate result required for qualification for a higher education grant.

The administration of the higher education grants scheme is statutorily entrusted to the local authorities.

To qualify for the award of a grant under the higher education grants scheme a candidate must obtain successes in the leaving certificate examination as prescribed in the scheme.
It is understood that the person in question did not obtain the prescribed successes in the leaving certificate examination and, accordingly, it is not possible for him to qualify for the award of a grant in accordance with the terms of the scheme.
