Vol. 415 No. 1

Written Answers. - Religious Instruction in Schools.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

455 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Education whether pupils in (a) national schools and (b) second-level schools which are in receipt of public funding are entitled on their own, as distinct from their parents' initiative, not to receive religious instruction; if not, if he will outline the age at which his Department accede to this right; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am satisfied that the general provisions under which children in primary and post-primary schools shall not receive religious instruction if their parents do not approve of such provide adequate safeguards in this respect.

No representations have been made to my Department for a change in these provisions.
