Vol. 415 No. 1

Written Answers. - Funding for Connolly Barracks Improvements.

Louis J. Belton

Ceist:

460 Mr. Belton asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline his views on (1) the failure of the Government to provide funding for necessary improvements at Connolly Barracks, Longford, in 1991, (2) whether this money is to be provided in 1992 and (3) the long term future of Connolly Barracks, Longford; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Provision of £8 million was made in the Vote for Defence for 1991 for the upkeep and improvement of military barracks and posts. The provision was expended on the most urgent works as recommended by the military authorities. Ordinary maintenance works only were carried out at Connolly Barracks, Longford, during that year.

A provision of £8 million is similarly included in the Defence Estimate for 1992. The more urgent works required in the various barracks, including Connolly Barracks, will be carried out within the resources provided.

There are no plans to alter the present status of Connolly Barracks.
