Vol. 415 No. 1

Written Answers. - Clam Fishing.

Gerry O'Sullivan

Ceist:

120 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been drawn to the submission presented to BIM regarding a survey for clam fishing which was submitted to his Department by a person (details supplied) in County Wicklow; if he will outline the progress made and the likely potential for clam fishing in Irish inshore waters; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have received a number of representations in this matter and I have brought them to the attention of an Bord Iascaigh Mhara.

I understand that the board are in communication with the person concerned, with a view to ascertaining the likely viability of the proposal.

The ongoing development of the sea-fishing industry is designed to maximise opportunities for job and income generation and I am satisfied that all opportunities for development of the industry in coastal areas are being pursued.

The potential for clam fishing is strong in Ireland, particularly along the west coast, and while the types of ground conditions suitable for these clams (Praire clams —Venus verrucosa) to breed along the east coast are not as common, BIM will continue to pursue their researches in the area in co-operation with all interested parties.
