Vol. 415 No. 1

Written Answers. - Job Creation.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

132 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the number of jobs that need to be created to reduce the unemployment figures in 1992.

I assume that the question refers to unemployment as defined in the annual Labour Force Survey. Ireland's demographic profile at present points to an annual increase in the labour force, in the absence of net migration and of change in labour force participation, of the order of 24,000. Accordingly, there would need to be a net increase in total employment in excess of 24,000, appropriately adjusted to allow for any net migration and/or change in labour force participation compared with 1991, to effect a reduction in the numbers of unemployed, as defined above, from their 1991 level.
