Vol. 415 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Fraud Investigation.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

54 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement on a recent media report (details supplied) which stated that the head of the fraud squad (details supplied) in Frankfurt had commented that he was surprised the Garda fraud squad in Dublin had not taken an active interest in the inquiry into a company (details supplied) which had allegedly defrauded European clients of over £10 million in 1991; and if he will give an assurance that (1) adequate resources were made available to the gardaí to investigate the alleged fraud and (2) full co-operation was given to the German police.

It is not the practice for the Minister for Justice to give detailed information to the House about individual Garda investigations except in singular instances where the circumstances of an investigation are so exceptional that such a course is deemed to be appropriate. All I propose to say in this case is that I have been informed by the Garda authorities that the case was the subject of a full and properly resourced investigation and that all requests for co-operation from the German authorities were acceded to, in fact the German police complimented the Garda on the assistance provided.
