Vol. 415 No. 3

Written Answers. - Coastal Areas Management.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

143 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the serious damage caused to beaches by motorcyclists and motorists, he will consider amending legislation to strengthen the powers to deal with these activities, especially in view of the damage being caused to natural amenities; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Environmental Protection Agency Bill, 1990 provides for the strengthening of penalties for breaches of by-laws made under the Public Health Acts Amendment Act 1907 as to the seashore and use thereof. Provision is also being made for the agency to give information, advice or make recommendations to local authorities in relation to the management of coastal areas for the purpose of environmental protection.
