Vol. 415 No. 4

Written Answers. - Legionnaire's Disease.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

179 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if she will give details of the number of Irish people who have died from legionnaire's disease in each of the years 1986 to 1991; and if she will outline the steps, if any, her Department are taking to prevent an increase of this disease.

Based on information compiled by my Department and the Central Statistics Office the following table shows the number of deaths in Ireland associated with legionnaire's disease in the years 1986 to 1991.

Legionnaire's disease is generally associated with faulty coolant systems/air conditioning. It is thought that the case notified in 1991 originated abroad and was brought back into this country. Notification of the death has been made to the relevant foreign authorities.
