Written Answers. - Primary School Capitation Grants.

Ceist:

193 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Education if he will give details of the capitation grant per pupil that has been paid to primary schools for each of the years 1980 to date; and if he has any plans to increase this grant in 1992.

The standard capitation grant per pupil for ordinary national schools for the years in question was as follows:

Commencing in 1992, eligible schools will gain on a phased basis from an increased capitation grant related to the employment of caretakers and clerical assistants, under arrangements agreed in theProgramme for Economic and Social Progress.

In addition to the above my Department is currently undertaking a unit cost study of the operating costs of schools in the primary and post-primary sectors. The existing rates of capitation grants to schools will be considered in the light of the results of this study.
