Written Answers. - Death Statistics.

John Bruton

Ceist:

105 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Health if he will outline the cause of death which has shown the greatest increase in the past five years.

The cause of death which has shown the single largest increase since 1985 is cancer. The disease accounted for 20.1 per cent of all deaths in 1985 (6,689 out of 33,213 deaths) rising to 22.5 per cent of all deaths in 1990 (7,143 out of 31,818).

Comprehensive details of all causes of death are available in the Central Statistics Office annual publication Report on Vital Statistics.
