42 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications whether contracts have yet been signed by Irish Rail for the purchase of 17 new rail carriages; and if she will confirm when the first of these will be available for use.
The chairman of CIE has informed me that the evaluation of the tenders for the supply and delivery of new railcars has been completed and that he expects a contract will be signed shortly.
Delivery of the new railcars is expected in early 1994, and I understand from the chairman that the new rolling stock will be introduced into operational service shortly thereafter.
