57 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the concern in the trade that the date for applying VAT on bottled water is not aligned with the date for the removal of excise duty on bottled water; and if he will outline the modifications, if any, he intends making to avoid a see-saw effect in prices which would be injurious to the trade.

I have already informed the soft drinks industry that I intend to make provision in the Finance Bill for a synchronised date for the full abolition of excise duty on soft drinks and the imposition of VAT on bottled waters. To avoid adverse budgetary consequences in 1992 of this change in approach, I will be proposing that the new provisions take effect from 1 November next.
