Vol. 416 No. 8

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given to me under Standing Order 20 (3) (a) and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Farrelly — whether the Minister for Justice will reverse a decision made by the Garda authorities to close Enfield Garda station from 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. daily; (2) Deputy Durkan — the subject matter of a recent report (details supplied) and whether he is satisfied that the report addresses the serious matter of excessively high insurance in the country which is exacerbated by the total absence of competition; (3) Deputy Allen — the situation where a retarded 14 year old boy was taken to the Bridewell Garda station in Cork where he was detained for five hours and the refusal by the authorities to allow his parents to accompany him; (4) Deputy McCartan — the housing crisis in the city of Dublin and the need for the Minister for the Environment to meet with the Housing Committee of Dublin Corporation to review the allocation to the city for housing construction this year; (5) Deputy Rabbitte — the announcement by the Minister for Health to scale back the proposed Tallaght regional hospital to a 350-bed unit and the implications of this decision for the catchment area to be served by the hospital; (6) Deputy Owen — the issue of an old pensioner (details supplied) now living in England and who has been denied his pension since July 1991; (7) Deputy Gregory — the resurging drug problem involving heroin and the new drug, ecstacy, in Dublin city, particularly involving persons on remand and already charged with drug related offences, and the need for additional resources to local Garda drug-units; (8) Deputy Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny)— the delay in the introduction of regulations to implement the Abbatoirs Act of 1988 as promised on several occasions in the House, and which has resulted in Carlow County Council paying £75,000 with no powers of recoupment; (9) Deputy Therese Ahearn — the failure to date by the Minister for Industry and Commerce to find a replacement industry for Digital, Clonmel, County Tipperary, where the remaining 80 employees will become redundant on 1 July 1992; (10) Deputy Ryan — the urgent need for a post primary school for Castleknock, Dublin 15, given the recent decision of the Minister for Education that the area did not warrant one at this stage; (11) Deputy Garland — the recent action taken by the Department of Social Welfare in striking 63 people off the live register in west Cork.

I have selected for discussion the matters raised by the following Deputies: Deputy Therese Ahearn, Deputy Allen and Deputy Gregory.
