219 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Health whether the old prohibited diphtheria vaccine (details supplied) was ever used in Ireland; if his attention has been drawn to the various studies carried out regarding the possible effects of some vaccines; and if he will make a statement on the matter and in particular in relation to the details supplied.
A vaccine called "Prohibit" has been authorised in this country since 30 January 1990. It has not been used in any vaccination programme.
With reference to the studies mentioned in the Deputy's question, the position is that studies pertaining to all vaccines are continuously monitored within my Department.
The "Prohibit" (Connaught) vaccine is carried on a diphtheria toxoid. It was used in the USA primarily and recommended for children 15 months and over. This particular vaccine is not being considered for inclusion in the national immunisation programme.
