Vol. 417 No. 1

Written Answers. - Voluntary Groups Funding.

Dick Spring

Ceist:

117 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Finance if he will give details of the funding, if any, which is available to voluntary groups under any of the following, or any other headings, and if he will also outline the means of application: (a) development of community centres, (b) youth activities, (c) creches, (d) women in education, (e) education in rural areas, (f) anti-poverty, (g) women's groups, (h) rural enterprise, (i) day care centres, (j) care of the elderly, (k) laundry, (l) meals on wheels, (m) tidy towns, (n) setting up community co-ops, (o) alternative energy, (p) mother and child, (q) development in traditional craft, (r) sport and (s) health.

The Western development fund exists to provide assistance for worthwhile and viable economic projects in the west of Ireland which are not eligible for consideration for assistance under any of the existing State programmes. The fund is not specific to any particular type of project organisation and could therefore be available to assist a project proposed by suitably constituted group, provided it met all of the criteria for the administration of the fund. The fund is administered on my behalf by the Central Development Committee and by the county development teams in the western counties.

Voluntary groups may also be eligible for EC Structural Funds assistance under the joint Interreg Programme for Ireland and Northern Ireland administered by my Department if they have projects which meet the specific criteria applying to the different measures in the programme which has as a general objective the encouragement of economic development in the Border areas. In particular, the Regional Development Sub-programme of Interreg includes a community development measure with the objective of encouraging statutory and voluntary organisations in the Border areas to consider the developmental needs of particular areas at local level and to put forward proposals.
