To date I have not received an application for a State mining lease to develop the deposit to which the Deputy is referring. Information regarding the extent of the level of reserves is a matter for the company concerned. The results of an initial feasibility study carried out by consultants on behalf of the company are under consideration at present and further studies are planned.
It is not possible at this time to indicate when mining operations will commence. Obviously there are commercial as well as technical considerations involved. However, I would be most anxious to ensure that should it be decided that development is economically viable, mining should commence as soon as possible provided that the required environmental and technical condition can be met. In my view it would also be highly desirable that processing of the raw material be carried out in the locality but the Deputy will appreciate that ultimately this will be a matter for the company.
I am well aware of the serious unemployment situation in the area. In considering an application for a State mining lease the employment potential of the development will be a major factor which I will take into account in arriving at a decision on whether to grant the lease.
