Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Nuclear Waste Disposal.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

133 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Energy if he will outline the quantity of nuclear waste exported from Ireland in each of the years 1987 to 1991; and the proposals he has to dispose of the waste in Ireland.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

134 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Energy if he will outline the countries our nuclear waste is exported to; and if he will specify the quantity exported.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 133 and 134 together.

The only movement of radioactive waste out of Ireland is of very small quantities of sealed radioactive sources which were originally imported, mainly from the UK, France and Germany, and which are being returned to the supplier at the end of their useful lives as required by the Nuclear Energy Board when granting licences for such importations. Between 50 and 60 sealed sources are returned each year. I have no proposals to dispose of such radioactive waste in Ireland.
