Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Use of MMT in Petrol.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

137 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Energy whether methylcyciopento dienyl manganese tricarbonyl which is a new octane-boosting additive is being added to petrol to replace lead manganese; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that MMT is a harmful neutroxin; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I do not have primary responsibility for regulations and controls on the specifications or standards for petrol, from a health or environmental point of view, I propose to respond only in relation to the activities of the Irish National Petroleum Corporation Limited. They have assured me that they do not add methyl-cyci-opento dienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT) to petrol produced at Whitegate Oil Refinery, nor have they any plans to do so.
