Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Teacher In-service Training.

John Bruton

Ceist:

174 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education if the relevant trade union interests agreed, (a) to the proposal to defer the full implementation of the proposals on in-service training of teachers and (b) to the extent of the reduction of £0.235 million in the amount promised in the Programme for Economic and Social Progress.

In the context of the renegotiation of the Programme for Economic and Social Progress discussions were held with the trade unions, including the teacher unions. In the education sector revised proposals were made in relation to pay, improvements in pupil/teacher ratios, provision of ex-quota guidance and vice-principal teachers, in-service training, provision for the disadvantaged, care-taking and clerical services in primary and post-primary schools and central services in regional technical colleges.

The revised programme was accepted by the teacher unions.
