Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Drumshanbo (Leitrim) School.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

191 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education the reason the board of management of Drumshanbo national school, County Leitrim has been told that the school is to lose a teacher from September next despite the fact that the numbers on the roll are 236.

The staffing of a national school is determined by the valid enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year.

In the case of Drumshanbo national school there were 224 pupils validly enrolled in the school on 30 September 1991, which warrants a staff of principal plus six assistants for the 1992-93 school year. The school will also have the services of a full-time remedial teacher. The post of seventh assistant will be discontinued with effect from 31 August 1992.

There were 12 pupils enrolled in a repeat sixth class on 30 September 1991. Pupils who have completed sixth standard in a national school should transfer to a post primary school in accordance with accepted practice. Only in exceptional circumstances will such pupils, if retained in a national school, be considered to be validly enrolled for staffing and other purposes.
