Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Athboy (Meath) School.

John V. Farrelly

Ceist:

196 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Education if his Department will reinvestigate the possibility of the provision of school caretakers under the social employment scheme, which has been refused by the Meath Trades Council (details supplied), and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The employment of caretakers under the social employment scheme is a matter for the board of management of each school in conjunction with the local FÁS office. This scheme is administered by the Department of Labour.

Under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress, it is proposed to introduce a phased programme, commencing this year, to expand the provision of caretaking and clerical services to national schools with 100 pupils upwards and to post-primary school with 200 pupils upwards.

I am not in a position to say at this point when it may be possible for St. Joseph's secondary school to benefit under this programme.
