Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointment.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

206 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Education if he has received an application for a shared remedial teacher between three national schools (details supplied); if, having regard to the need to conserve resources and maximise their utilisation to the greater efficiency, he will outline when he will be able to confirm that the application has been approved and the remedial teacher appointed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have received a request for a remedial teacher from the schools in question.

As the Deputy will be aware, 80 additional remedial posts serving over 240 schools were allocated for the school year 1991-92 under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress arrangements.

These appointments were made following the collection of data and information from schools by the Department's primary inspectorate. The posts were then allocated on the basis of priority of need, as indicated by the information collected by the inspectorate.

The needs of other schools, including the schools mentioned by the Deputy, will be kept under review.
