Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Terry Leyden

Ceist:

430 Mr. Leyden asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will approve unemployment assistance for a person (details supplied) in County Roscommon.

The person concerned applied for unemployment assistance from 22 July 1991. His means were assessed at £132.69 per week (£6,900 per annum), based on the net yearly value of a farm holding which exceeds the statutory limit in his case for receipt of unemployment assistance. He appealed this decision to the independent social welfare appeals office. The case has been listed for oral hearing which will be arranged for the week commencing 30 March 1992.

Ceist:

431 Mr. Leyden asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will approve payment of unemployment benefit for a person (details supplied) in County Roscommon.

The person concerned applied for unemployment benefit on 16 January 1992. Entitlement to unemployment benefit is subject to the condition, inter alia, that the claimant must have at least 39 contributions, whether paid or credited, in the “governing” contribution year. According to the records of my Department he has only 31 paid contributions at the appropriate rate during the period 6 April 1990 to 5 April 1991 which is the governing contribution year for his claim of 16 January 1992.

He has now requested the local office for permission to sign the unemployed register retrospectively from January 1991 to March 1991 on the grounds that he was unemployed during the period. This request is being examined at present and he will be notified of the outcome at an early date.
