Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Síochána Mounted Unit.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

85 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Justice whether he intends to sanction the formation of a mounted unit of the Garda Síochána in the Dublin Metropolitan area; if so, if he will outline the amount this will cost; his views on whether this type of operation will benefit crowd control and other similar operations; and if he does not intend sanctioning this operation, the reason therefor.

I am not convinced that the benefits of having a mounted police unit in the Garda Síochána are such that they justify the establishment of such a unit. The current Garda arrangements for crowd control are adequate to meet present needs.
