Ceist:94 Mrs. Taylor-Quinn asked the Minister for Defence when he plans to restore subsistence and overtime allowances to Army personnel on Border duty; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Subsistence allowance is payable to personnel of the Permanent Defence Forces, including those serving in Border units, subject to conditions prescribed in Defence Forces Regulations.
Military personnel in ranks up to and including colonel are paid a military service allowance — at present £1,764 per year. This allowance is designed to compensate for certain liabilities associated with military service, such as long and unsocial hours of duty and the restrictions inherent in military discipline.
Personnel serving in Border units are also paid a Border duty allowance, the present rates of which are as follows — officers: £43.28 per week; other ranks: £37.87 per week.
