Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

126 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the amount of money spent on the provision of physical education equipment in secondary schools in each of the years 1989 to 1991.

The following tabular statement indicates the grants which were paid to secondary schools by my Department for the years in question for the purchase of physical education equipment:

£

1988/89

79,276.82

1989/90

27,448.70

1990/91

7,585.75

In addition the following grants were paid to secondary schools by my Department for the purchase of replacement equipment for specialist subjects including physical education:

£

1988/89

568,765.23

1989/90

558,413.85

1990/91

520,545.37

These grants are exclusive of the cost of the salaries of physical education teachers for which separate information is not readily available.

Grants are payable towards the cost of providing physical education equipment as part of the general scheme of grants for the provision and equipment of national schools. It would not be feasible, however, to disaggregate the amount in respect of physical education equipment which is included in the total amount of grants paid.
