I have been advised by Comhairle na nOspidéal of the need for consultants in infectious diseases in the management and treatment of patients with HIV-AIDS. On 26 March 1992, I announced my approval for a post of consultant in infectious diseases to head up an AIDS Service for the north side of Dublin. Arrangements are being made to put this service in place as a matter of urgency.
I will be considering the further appointments of consultants in infectious diseases as sympathetically as possible in the context of the many competing demands for resources throughout the health service.
