95 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice whether he intends to introduce legislation to prevent An Post making available their household computer files to commercial companies for the purposes of sending unsolicited mail by way of a postal addressagraph system; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
This question is similar to Question No. 16 of 6 February 1992.
As was mentioned on that occasion, the Data Protection Act, 1988 imposes restrictions on the collection, processing, use and disclosure of automated personal data. The aim of the Act is to protect the rights of individuals in relation to personal data kept about them on computer. The Act provides that individuals have the right to have their names removed from direct marketing lists.
