On the basis of feedback from a wide range of interests I am satisfied that there is a very high level of general support for the regulations and there would not appear to be any evidence of widespread non-observance.
A consultative committee was established by my predecessor to examine the possible extension of the regulations to the workplace. This committee consists of representatives from the relevant organisations and agencies — the Departments of Health and Labour, the Health and Safety Authority, ICTU, the FIE and a consultant medical practitioner.
I have been informed that the report of the consultative committee will be submitted to me over the next week and on the basis of the recommendations contained therein, I will consider what further action might be needed in this area.
