Vol. 420 No. 9

Written Answers. - Commercial Waste Recycling.

John Bruton

Ceist:

148 Mr. J. Bruton and Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the present position of the study of the way in which the tax system might be adapted to encourage commercial waste recycling.

The study referred to, which has been completed, was one of a number of initiatives proposed in the Environment Action Programme to encourage greater recycling of waste. More recently, my Department has commissioned a more broadly based study to assess the overall potential for recycling in Ireland. The brief for the latter study includes examining the scope for improving markets for recyclable materials and the feasibility of various possible market interventions or incentives. I propose to evaluate all the various options when the latter study has been completed.
