Vol. 421 No. 2

Written Answers. - Prison Conditions.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

18 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Justice the steps he proposes to take to improve the conditions of HIV offenders in the prison system; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There are a number of arrangements already in place, including enhanced general medical and specialist care, counselling and advice, to help HIV offenders. This process will be assisted by the completion, later this year, of a new unit in Mountjoy Prison to cater for the special needs of persons suffering from communicable diseases, including HIV/AIDS. I also expect to have shortly the report of the Expert Group which was set up by my predecessor to advise on future policies for the management of prisoners with communicable diseases. I intend to give priority attention to the group's recommendations.
