Vol. 421 No. 2

Written Answers. - Drugs Misuse.

Micheál Martin

Ceist:

91 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the degree to which cocaine, heroin and ecstasy are being used here compared with cannabis.

The information which is available to the Garda authorities relates to drug seizures and the number of persons charged with drug offences. This information is published in the Garda Commissioner's Annual Report on Crime, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library. The 1991 report will be published shortly.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that cannabis resin is still the main drug of misuse in Ireland and accounts for over 70 per cent of all drug charges and seizures. While there have been some significant seizures involving cocaine, heroin and ecstasy these represent a small proportion of total drug misuse in Ireland.
