Vol. 421 No. 5

Written Answers. - Maternity Hospital Practices.

Madeleine Taylor-Quinn

Ceist:

74 Mrs. Taylor-Quinn asked the Minister for Health if he has studied the variations in the practice of caesarean sections and inductions of labour among maternity hospitals; and if he will outline whether these findings have any implications for health policy in this area.

Medical decisions in hospitals are a matter for the clinicians depending on the needs of the particular patient concerned. I am satisfied that the overall quality of service to mothers and babies in Irish Maternity Hospitals and Units is of a very high standard. However, I am asking the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for its views on the reported variations in the practice of caesarean section and inductions of labour among hospitals.
