Vol. 421 No. 6

Written Answers. - Primary Education Costs.

Mervyn Taylor

Ceist:

63 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the amount of money spent per pupil in primary schools in the most recent year for which figures are available; if he will give details of the comparable figures for each of the previous years making appropriate adjustment for inflation; and if he will make a statement on the trend indicated by these figures and generally on the matter.

The estimated amounts of State expenditure (excluding capital expenditure) on first-level education for the years 1988-91, on a per capita basis, at constant 1991 prices, are as follows: 1988, £868; 1989, £909; 1990, £928; 1991, £981.

The 1991 figure represents an increase in real terms of 13 per cent on 1988. This is a clear indication of the Government's commitment to improving our primary education service.
