Vol. 421 No. 6

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointments.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

103 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if he will outline (a) the total number and location of remedial teachers appointed to primary schools in County Kildare and (b) the number of applications for such appointments still on hand; when he expects to be able to respond to such requests; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There are currently 38 remedial teachers serving national schools in County Kildare. Of the 21,000, approximately, pupils, attending the 89 ordinary national schools in County Kildare, 18,000, approximately, attend the 56 schools which have the services of a remedial teacher either on a full-time or shared basis. This includes 11 schools allocated the services of a remedial teacher in the current school year as part of a national distribution of 80 such posts under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress.

It would be a matter for the individual boards of management to indicate whether or not they have the services of a remedial teacher.
At present there are a total of 27 primary schools in County Kildare seeking the services of a remedial teacher.
The needs of the schools in County Kildare will be kept in mind when it is next possible to allocate remedial posts.
