Vol. 422 No. 1

Written Answers. - Salmon Stocks.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

36 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Marine whether salmon stocks are declining; and if so, if he will outline his plans, if any, to reverse the trend.

I am very much aware of the fact that there has been an overall decline in salmon stocks. This decline is not unique to Ireland but is worldwide, with Canada, Scotland, Norway and Iceland all reporting a decline in their salmon stocks. There is at present no conclusive evidence to identify the exact nature of this decline but my Department's officials and scientific staff are actively investigating the situation nationally and keeping abreast of developments internationally.

All necessary and feasible steps are being taken to halt the decline. These steps include strengthened protection at sea as well as comprehensive programmes to maintain and improve the fisheries habitat.
