Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Legislative Intentions.

Dick Spring

Ceist:

11 Mr. Spring asked the Taoiseach if he will outline the Government's legislative priorities in the autumn session of the Dáil; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In accordance with the normal practice, the Government Chief Whip will provide the Opposition Whips with a list of the Government's legislative intentions for the autumn session nearer the commencement of the session.

I wish to repeat my question. Surely the Government have some idea of their legislative priorities, particularly in regard to legislation dealing with the right to travel and information, issues which we have been discussing for a number of months? Is the work on this legislation nearly completed or otherwise? Can the Taoiseach give the House an outline of the legislation the Government intend bringing before the House?

It is intended to meet the timescale for the abortion legislation set out by the four party leaders in their statement on the Maastricht Treaty. This legislation will certainly be included in the programme for the autumn session. As the House will be aware, we must also bring forward a second Finance Bill to further harmonise our taxes in preparation for the Single Market. Those two Bills will form the major part of the legislative agenda. Other matters have not been decided as yet.
