Vol. 422 No. 4

Written Answers. - Clare Unemployment.

Madeleine Taylor-Quinn

Ceist:

228 Mrs. Taylor-Quinn asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will outline (a) the number of people who drew unemployment assistance and benefit in County Clare in each of the years 1987 to 1992, (b) the cost to his Department of these payments and (c) if there are any forecasts for the future available.

Unemployment statistics are compiled by reference to the local office from where the claims are administered, and the catchment area of local office is not necessarily confined to a particular county. The numbers of persons receiving unemployment benefit and unemployment assistance on the live register at the four local offices situated in County Clare are as set out as follows:

Unemployment statistics are not maintained in a manner which would facilitate the provision of the cost data sought. Forecasts of unemployment at local or county level would not be possible without detailed local knowledge and no such exercise has been carried out by my Department.
