Ceist:224 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Education if he has finalised his proposals for the employment of secretaries/clerks in national schools; and if so, the way in which he intends to implement these proposals.

Under the terms of the Programme for Economic and Social Progress a phased programme of financial assistance by way of supplementary capitation grant for the provision of caretaking and clerical services in national schools has been introduced from the 1st September 1992. The initial phase of the programme targeted schools with enrolments of 500 pupils or over, which have not had caretaking and/or clerical assistance already under the existing Department's schemes. The phased arrangements, which will be complemented by provisions under the Social Employment Scheme will eventually benefit all national schools with enrolments of greater than 100 pupils.
